The Need
There are 7.6 million African American students in our country's k-12 education system. They currently have a graduation rate of 79%. That means that 1.5 million African American children will not graduate high school.
Our Work
Studies show that students that have one or more teachers that look like them in K-6th grade are 29-39% more likely to graduate high school. That would be over 500,000 of our nations African American students graduating High school.
The Benefit
We believe our work is the social justice initiative of our time. The "Pipeline to Prison" theory has shown that there is a direct correlation between 3rd grade reading scores and our countries increasing incarceration rates. Man Up's mission is to "Change the world through the classroom." For every quality man of color we put in the classroom, it is a proven fact that those students' odds at becoming successful members of society increase by 29% for students of color, and more specifically 39% for African American boys.
